ASHBY, Robert Lockridge - Putnam

After an illness of some weeks of complications due to old age, Robert Lockridge Ashby for many years a prominent and successful business man at Ladoga, died at his home on East Main Street, Thursday afternoon May 23, 1929, aged 81 years, 6 months and 5 days.  Mr. Ashby was born near Parkersburg, November 18, 1847, the second of the four children of Thompson V. and Dulcenia (Lockridge) Ashby.  He was educated in the public schools and studied for three years at Wabash College.  On Sept 29, 1875, he was united in marriage to Alice Josephine Fordice, at Russellville, and settled on what is still known as the Ashby farm, three miles southwest of Ladoga, where they lived for 27 years, then moving to Ladoga, where they since made their home.  In 1892, he purchased the Ladoga grain elevator from Beber Biddel, and conducted this business with much success until 1917 when he retired.  Mr. and Mrs. Ashby were the parents of 7 children, two of whom died in infancy and five, with the wife and mother, survive - three sons, T.V., and Fred F, Ashby of Jackson, Tenn and W.W. Ashby of this place, two daughters, Mrs. John M. Myers of Southampton, Canada and Miss Bertha Ashby of Bloomington.  He is also survived by a brother, William H. Ashby, and a sister, Mrs. James Foster, both of this place and 9 grandchildren.  In early manhood, Mr. Ashby joined the ME Church at Crawfordsville, later moving his membership to the Parkersburg Presbyterian Church and in 1888, he became a member of the Ladoga Presbyterian Church.  He was a member of Ladoga Lodge No 187, F&AM and of the Crawfordsville Knight Templars.  Funeral services were held at the late home, Saturday morning at 10 o'clock in charge of Rev. VD Ragan of the Ladoga Presbyterian Church.  Dr. CB Werts and Mrs. Grant rose sang, "The Old Rugged Cross," accompanied by Mrs. CW Clore at the piano.  Pall bearers were Robert and Thomas Foster, Howard and JT Ashby and Rudolph Fordice, nephews and Cullen Lockridge, a cousin of the deceased.  Flower bearers were Mrs. George Bridewell and Miss Mary Rogers of Bloomington, Miss Belle Somerville and Miss Bell Lockridge of Indianapolis; Mrs. Frank Davis, Mrs. CB Werts, Mrs. Cline Graybill, Mrs. Carl Otterman, Mrs. HK Walterhouse and Miss Lydia Hostetter.  Interment was made at the Ladoga cemetery. Among those coming from a distance to attend the funeral besides the immediate family were: Mr. and Mrs. George Bridwell; Mrs. JB Bridwell and Miss Mary Rogers of Bloomington; Mr. and Mrs. TJ Foster, Miss Belle Lockridge, Miss Belle Somerville and J.T. Ashby of Indianapolis; Mrs. Otto Bruce of Crown Point, Mrs. Claude Dunnington, Mrs. Frank Davidson and Frank McNutt of Crawfordsville; Mr. and Mrs. Morton Fordice, Mrs. Mollie Gardner, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Lloyd, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ramsey, Mrs. Florence Byrd and Charles Fordice of Russellville; Mr. and Mrs. Carl Porter and family of Guion; Mr. and Mrs. Cullen Lockridge, Mrs. Fred Lockridge, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Ashby and family of Roachdale. - thanks so very much to Diane Cross for going the extra mile for this one :)
